CASE STUDY:

Abstract:
A Federal Agency with a highly volatile workforce required an efficient means to maintain a consistent identity for users across the enterprise. The transient nature of the workforce and the rapid ramp up necessitated a highly capable distributed management architecture capable of high availability and extensive registration, authentication, authorization, and administration throughput.

Business Challenge:
Existing in the Federal space as purveyors of a security solution presented several interesting challenges. The first of these was creating a solution to keep up with the demand of ever-changing security landscape. Another was managing the breadth and depth of integration requirements in a multi-platform environment. Yet another was designing the processes to handle the demand of the transient workforce coupled with the distributed, high availability requirements of the system.

To confront the agency’s issues, Definitive Logic decomposed the problem into manageable portions. Our consultants performed analysis and optimization activities to create a flexible framework for identity management. The core functions were developed upon the framework, and host applications were integrated into the platform. At present, 70 COTS and custom applications are integrated with this framework across the agency.

• Documenting, analyzing, and streamlining the current identity management processes
• Enabling support for Task-Role Based Access Control (T-RBAC), NIST Assurance Levels
• Developing a service based approach to integration with the various enterprise components
• Developing a single sign on capability to create a user friendly environment for people to register, authenticate, and perform general account lifecycle tasks (updating profile, changing passwords, etc.)
• Creating an environment where certification and accreditation of the host systems became significantly less onerous
